08-08-07 :: Avoiding home security fraud. How to trust the right security professional

Its mid-afternoon and you respond to a knock on your front door. The well dressed individual informs you they are a representative of the company that installed your home security system and asks to come in and look around to make sure everything is okay. They may allude to a recent upgrade that needs to be installed or inform you of a problem that requires their immediate attention.

Many con-men and burglars are using a new method to defeat your security system. Getting into your house posing a security alarm technician is only a ruse to obtain information about your system and find any weaknesses they may be able to exploit.

How can you be sure you’re dealing with the professionals who installed your security system? Here are some simple tips to keep your home safe.

1. If you suspect something right away, don’t open the door! Make them prove to you they are who they say they are before you allow them to see you or the inside of your home.

2. Do they have an appointment? Be wary of an unannounced visit. Reputable security alarm companies typically do not sell products and services door to door. If you are unsure, call the company who installed your system and ask if they have sent a technician to your home.

3. Ask for verification. Request to see a badge and identification. Ask for certification showing that the individual is qualified to work on your equipment.

4. Look for a company vehicle. Most home security professionals will drive a company vehicle with a logo identifying the company they are with. Is the vehicle in plain site?

5. Ask to see their equipment. An installer will carry many tools specific to their trade, ready to fix any unseen problem that may arise.

If you think you may have received a visit from someone you are unsure about. Don’t hesitate! Call your security company to verify their employment. It may even be a good idea to call the local authorities and provide a description.

For more tips or information, call the professional installers who maintain your system. They will be happy to help keep you and your family safe.
